Objectives

• Create International contact and understanding.
• Increase awareness of applications of Chemistry in society.
• Increase skills in video production using iPad.
• Broaden views on digital communication.
• Prepare for and stimulate students to choose an examination project during next year on DB Chemistry.

Students

• Natural science program, second year, final part of course in Chemistry
• 12 students dividend in 3 groups
• Large span in academic level
• Mixed gender and ethnicity

Allocated time

• 6 + 3 h

Videos

• Group chooses from 8-10 given topics in Chemistry
• Each group produces one video of around 3 min length
• Anna Oldner Bengtsson instructs on video techniques on iPad
• Video deals with Chemistry in society and includes a brief personal presentation.

Panel of suggested topics

Electric cars, biofuels, cosmetics, bread-baking, cheese- and butter production, recycling of mobile phones, solar cells, HIV-drugs, narcotics in sewage water and brewing of beer.

First phase

• Choice of project
• 6 h in class
• Beginning April 28, submission May 11, full-time
• Gathering of subject information and planning of manuscript
• Production of videos

Second phase

• 3 h in class
• Beginning May 23 end ending May 31, full-time
• Evaluation of videos produced by Swedish and by German students and DB
• Chemistry project at large
• Self-evaluation by questionnaire on iPad
• My own collection of observations on student learning forming part of the grading of the chemistry course
