History – the enlightenment

When I first started working on this project I did know that I wanted to offer my students contact and learning with their peers in another country. But other than that I didn’t really know how to start or how to get the project in motion.

After some initial contact via e-mail with my colleagues in Kassel I think we knew that we had the same goals and similar thoughts about how to progress the work. We thought we should use whatever theme in our history courses that we were examining and try use that as a stepping stone for our students. But together with work in general, working with Digital Bridges proved a bit to challenging and we temporarily put the project on ice.

Digital Bridges Chemistry 2017 Evaluation phase

The last week and this week my students were asked to fill in a questionaire, first individually with the DBC-Project in focus, and secondly in groups of four discussing and noting how to learn Chemistry in general with a focus on metacognitive aspects. The activity of the students, but not the actual transcripts, in the second part was assessed and taken into account for the final grading of their Chemistry 2-course.

The results of this evaluation process gave both the students and me a certain amount of new insights on the role of DBC and other activities in the learning and teaching process This was certainly was the purpose of all these Google Forms. One of the two students with pending failing grades F actually participated to a certain extent in the evaluation process. Also, two students raised their grade from balancing between, or rather below, D and C, to a clear C. Our passing grades go from E to A, with A being the highest grade, and F denoting a failing grade,

The evaluation process thus gave a closure to the DBC-Project. Furthermore, it met one of the previously mentioned and certainly also intended goals of the endeavour into digital communication as a part of a Chemistry course.

If you are able to read Swedish, and are interested in details, I can surely mail the corresponding Excel-files. Just let me know on anders.hansson@rudbeck.se.

Math – Videos about complex numbers

The topic “complex numbers” is not even part of our math curriculum in Germany. However, without any significant help by a teacher, the students Paula, Nicole, Carolin and Tobias made these two videos about just this topic. They were supported by their Swedish partners, who, using digital devices, explained the topic and helped with the understanding. Maybe these videos can now in return help the Swedish students to prepare for a test in the coming days.

Progress in Digital Bridges Chemistry

Here are the latest news from us in Sweden with two examples of the videos from my Rudbeck chemistry students.

If you enjoy watching them half as much as my students have enjoyed producing them, it  is a success, if I may say so.

It appers that our students are now intensely engaged in digital exhange also via email and social media. It was a nice initiative from the German side, and is in the true spirit of Digital Bridges.

In the subject mathematics, the students are currently cooperating on the topic complex numbers. The German students are supported by their Swedish partners in learning about this topic and they are subsequently creating a video about it, which they can then send to Sweden in return.

Here is the current state of the cooperation; written by Paula from the class EA:

Two weeks ago we got a task about Complex Numbers from our math teacher. We should make a video about this topic with help of our Swedish partners. Our Swedish partners are going to see the video so we have to do it in English. So we got our task and sent them to our partners. We asked them if they could help us with this topic.

Betty answered me and said that she wants to write it down, therefore I waited a couple of days. When she was finished, she explained the topic to me pretty well so I understood it. Now we can make the video.

The following pictures give an insight about the communication that is going on between Paula and her partner Betty:

History

I decided to participate in the Digital Brides Project because I think this is a good opportunity to meet new people and learn about the Swedish culture. Sweden is a really beautiful country with an interesting history and a royal family. History in general is really interesting to me. With this project I have the chance to learn how historical events affected two countries differently (Sweden and Germany) while getting to know new people and learn more about Sweden itself. In addition to that I have the chance to travel to Sweden and to deepen my connections and my knowledge about the country, which is really exciting.
I already have contact to two Swedish girls and our common topic would be the French Revolution and the difference of how it affected Germany and Sweden. Our time period will be 1750 – 1880.
Let’s see how this continues!

Hey I’m Jasmin!

I was very excited when I first heard that our school is offering the Digital Bridges project. I decided to work with the art group because art is one of my favorites subjects in school. I’d like to get to know the Swedish culture so I’m hopefully chosen for the exchange. In addition I think that it’s very important for our generation to have many connection all over the world. This project is the perfect start for this. As a beginning we drew an indirect self portrait and recorded a text to explain our drawing.

I’m looking forward to meet the other students and I hope for a good cooperation!

Best regards

Jasmin

Hello, my name is Julia,

I participate in the Digital Bridges project in the subject arts, because i’m interested in learning something about people from different countries. I hope that we can show each other new things, like new techniques and styles.

Farther it is a very unique experience to work with other students from schools in different countries and hopefully stay in touch with the Swedish people. Maybe we will be able to make some new friends too. Also i’m looking forward to the coming visit of the Documenta in Kassel.

Furthermore, I hope that the student exchance will take place, because in my opinion it would be a great experiece for us to get an insight in other cultures and countries.

In arts we drew an indirect self portrait, which should reflect our personality, our interests and our character. We wrote a short text about the expression of our drawings and made an audio file.

I hope we will be able to get in contact soon.

Yours Julia.
